It began with an inspired group of students seeking an opportunity to showcase our city, our karate, and the club that we are all so proud to be a part of.
Fifteen individuals sat around the breakfast table for an entire day: brainstorming, planning, sketching, and discussing the best ways to bring a true Kyokushin Tournament to life.
The first meeting led to a series of meetings and the formation of committees, sub-committees, and sub-sub-committees. "Committee" was never a more fitting term. The individuals involved in this planning process delivered unprecedented levels of commitment and teamwork to this process, and the end result was the reward.
On March 12, the 2006 Foothills Kyokushin Karate Tournament came to fruition at the Deerfoot Inn and Casino – the first-ever hotel venue for a Kyokushin event. The venue itself presented some unique challenges, but the trade-offs were immeasurable.
The day's schedule showcased competitors from across Western Canada in both Kata and Kumite competitions. The caliber was high – the spirit higher. Skin prickled at the inspiring deliveries of the Fighter's Oath at the opening ceremonies of both the morning and afternoon events, as spectators drank in the atmosphere and experienced Kyokushin pride and skill first-hand.
Over 130 children and coloured-belt competitors of all ages stepped onto the mat throughout the morning in a smooth two-ring set-up, culminating in an awards ceremony before the lunch break. The winner of the technical award for the morning went to Eileen Kohorst of Rocky Mountain Dojo for her kata. The spirit award went to Eric Forget of Calgary for overcoming unbelievable adversity in his match against a fighter who outweighed him by 100 pounds.
The intensity continued as the afternoon saw the men and women's open divisions, as well as the semi-final and final rounds of the coloured-belt divisions. Also featured were kata finals, kata and self-defense demonstrations, an inspiring video sampler of Kyokushin competition, as well as the tameshiwari rounds for the open division competitors. The audience watched in awe as fighters snapped boards with seiken, shuto, hiji, and sokuto, with seemingly effortless blows.
The day ended with a final awards ceremony. First place in the open divisions went to Nathan Howat of Edmonton and Jose Potter of Calgary. The technical award went to Jordan Forget of Calgary, and the spirit award went to Lalena Desautels of Vancouver.
The tournament committee would like to extend heartfelt appreciation to the sponsors who made this event possible, and especially to the competitors, officials, and spectators who came out from near and far to make this by far the most memorable and successful Kyokushin event that Calgary has ever seen.
Plans are already underway for next year's event, which will be called the 2007 Calgary Cup. We look forward with great excitement to seeing you all here in Calgary at this time next year!
